There are two types of super hit songs: Some become super hit and become immortal. Like Baharon Phool Barsao, Thade Rahiyo, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, etc. Some become hit song for a couple of generations, and then fade away from coming generations.
‘Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahan Mein’ had all the ingredients to become immortal song: great composition by one of the top composers S.D.Burman, Sung by legend Lata Mangeshkar, who has put this song in the list of her best songs, filmed on legendary actress Nimmi in which legend hero was Dev Anand; but I think the new generations does not remember it like the songs I previously mentioned. Lataji’s voice has always been magical, but the emotional songs she sang during her early years, put songs in even further higher level of emotions.
To make better thing the best, it was filmed on the queen of emotions, actress Nimmi. What I said about songs also goes for superstar actors, when it comes to becoming immortal. India has given many great actors-actresses. But if someone asks me to give one name for best actress, I will have to give Nimmi’s name. She became internationally famous in film ‘Aan’, (she turned down offers in Hollywood), It was first Technicolor film to premier in England with the title ‘Savage Princess’ But France highlighted Nimmi’s character in the film and titled it ‘Mangala, fille des Indes’ (Mangala, girl of India) she became very choosy about her roles. Many times she chose side roles that had potential for good acting, rather than populous lead roles. Like in Mere Mehboob, she was offered lead role. But she chose side role. The lead role was then given to Sadhna, who became extremely famous, and Nimmi faded away. Besides great beauty and perfect features, she could portray very complex emotions that many top actors can’t. Like sadness mixed with anger with a touch of insanity. I can go on…..
I spent lot of time to program emotional instrument on my synthesizer to give justice to Lata Mangeshkar’s emotional voice. I hope you like my instrumental remix
On a personal note:
Long time ago, I met a beautiful girl in a party, who sang this song extremely well. I was single. I talked to her for few minutes during the party, and was very impressed by her personality and manners also. With my interest in music and poetry, I thought this was the perfect girl for me to be a life partner. To my heartbreak, I soon found out that she was already married, and the one-sided love-story ended quickly.
After many years, I don’t know where that beautiful girl is, who sang this song in the party; and she probably does not know where I am; but when I hear this song, I still picture that beautiful girl singing this song…. and I murmur…..’Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahan Mein Kho Gaye’
