Verses and poems are great ways to impress your lovers or dates, especially on a day like Valentine’s Day.
Many years ago, when I was going to have my first or second Valentine’s day in USA, some American friends at my office asked me if I was going to go out with a date on the Valentine’s day. I said ‘Yeah’. They told me that there is a famous verse for lovers to say to the girlfriends/wives.
Roses are red, Violets are blue;
Sugar is sweet, and so are you!
I hadn’t told anyone that I was a poet. I did say the verse to my date, and she liked it, especially when I was a new immigrant.
Then I began analyzing the verse.
Roses are red, Violets are blue. That is just a statement of the fact. Roses are red, violets are blue, grass is green, crow is black, circle is round…..and so on. He does not say, “Darling, you are beautiful like roses and violets.
Then the lover says, ‘Sugar is sweet, and so are you’
In other words, “Darling, you will be as much responsible for my diabetes as the sugar.”
