This is a great dance song from Bollywood film ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ Besides the good composition by Salim – Sulaiman, the singers Salim Merchant  and Sunidhi Chauhan have done great job. Sunidhi was born to sing this song. Very few others can provide proper voice and atmosphere that fits the composition. Actors/dancers  Anushka Sharma and  Ranveer Singh have performed memorable dance on this song. Choreography and lyrics are also superb. Anushka’s face expressions can make every young man  fall in love with her.

Music Score: Joe Brooks

Singer : Debby Boone

We love many songs in our lifetime, but for only few songs we remember the exact location where we first heard them. This was one of those songs for me. I was driving to work on McCart Street in Fort Worth (Texas) in 1977, and heard this song for the first time and loved it right away. When I arrived at the office, I asked a friend if he knew the singer’s name. He said, ‘Debby Boone’.

Beautiful Debby is daughter of legendary singer/song writer, TV host Pat Boone (also known for his handsome looks), who was second to only Elvis Presley in breaking chart records in ‘50’s. The day before this song by Debby was released, she was Pat’s daughter. The day when the song hit the chart; Pat was Debby’s dad. I am sure most dads would be proud to be called that way. ‘You Light Up My Life’ broke all the all time records, and won just about every award music and entertainment industry had to offer, including Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe.

Most songs get popular mostly for their compositions and singing performance,  and very little for the lyrics. That’s why, many times popular songs have very disappointing lyrics. No one expects a lyric to be a poem, but writing good lyrics is a separate art itself. The lyrics of ‘You Light Up My Life’ can be considered one of the best ever.

YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE

So many nights I sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me
Alone in the dark but now
You’ve come along

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

Rollin’ at sea, adrift on the water
Could it be finally I’m turning for home?
Finally, a chance to say hey,
I love You
Never again to be all alone

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

It can’t be wrong
When it feels so right
‘Cause You
You light up my life

Some call it a love song; some call it religious song where ‘You’ hints towards God. No matter how you want to interpret, the lyrics create environment of uplifting of the soul.  ‘The Social Norms’ keep on changing by the time, so where to go for the guidance? The answer is in the line, ‘It can’t be wrong, when it feels so right’ It is our ‘gut feeling’ that has answer to find someone, who would join us, and would guide us to go from darkness to the light. Sitting by a dark, quiet (lonely?) window waiting for the soul mate (the light)’s appearance, and and hear his voice (song) is heart warming.

I hope you like my instrumental arrangement of this beautiful song.

I hope you find someone to light up your life, if that hasn’t happened yet. Many greetings of the holiday season.
